Constitution of the Gay
Straight Alliance
Article I: Name
Section 1:
The name of
this organization shall be Gay Straight Alliance, here after
referred to as GSA.
Article II: Purpose
Section 1:
The purpose of
this organization shall be to provide members of the
university community a comfortable social environment, where
they can freely discuss gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgendered, and straight topics about which they have
concerns.
Article III: Affiliations
Section 1:
This
organization is affiliated with Indiana University
Southeast, here after referred to as IUS.
Article IV: Membership
Section 1:
The majority
of the membership of this organization shall consist of
enrolled IUS students.
Section 2:
This
organization and its members shall not discriminate against
any individuals for reasons of race, national origin, color,
religion, gender, age, veteran status, sexual orientation,
and/or ability status.
Section 3:
Membership in
this organization shall be open to all who are interested
and be a currently enrolled student of IUS in good standing
with the university.
Article V: Officers
Section 1:
The officers of this
organization shall consist of:
- President – The president shall
chair all meetings and act as an intermediary between
the membership of GSA and the administration of IUS.
- Vice President – The Vice
President shall assist the president were needed and act
in the president’ absence.
- Secretary – The secretary shall
maintain all files and records of GSA. The secretary
shall also record and make available minutes of each
meeting of GSA.
- Treasurer – The treasurer shall be
responsible for maintaining the funds of GSA. This will
include depositing all proceeds and donations, paying
any monies owed, and reporting the financial status of
the GSA at the meetings.
Section 2:
The qualifications
for each office shall be:
- President and Vice President –
Must be currently enrolled at IUS and maintain a GPA of
no less than 2.5.
- Secretary and Treasurer – Must be
currently enrolled and maintain a GPA of no less than
2.0.
Section 3:
The term of each office
shall be one year from October 31st to October 30th.
Section 4:
Should an officer’s
position become vacant the following will take place:
- President – The vice president
will vacate his/her position and become the president.
- Vice President – At the first
meeting after the position becomes vacant, nominations
will be taken for a replacement. There will be a vote
to choose the replacement at the next meeting. If there
are no nominations this will continue until the position
is filled.
- Secretary – At the first meeting
after the position becomes vacant, nominations will be
taken for a replacement. There will be a vote to choose
the replacement. If there are no nominations this will
continue until the position is filled. During the
absence of a secretary either an officer or staff
advisor shall maintain the minutes.
- Treasurer – At the first meeting
after the position becomes vacant, nominations will be
taken for a replacement. There will be a vote to choose
the replacement. If there are no nominations this will
continue until the position is filled. During the
absence of a treasurer either an officer or staff
advisor shall maintain the financials of GSA.
Article VI: Advisor
Section 1:
Our
organization advisor must be a member of the faculty,
administration, or staff of IUS.
Section 2:
The duties and
responsibilities of the advisor shall be:
- Attend meetings and events
- Provide information on university
polices and procedures
- Provide guidance and ideas
- Oversee the maintenance of the GSA
financials
Section 3:
Should the
position of advisor become vacant, a new advisor will be
sought out. The membership will vote at a meeting to
install the new advisor.
Article VII: Meetings
Section 1:
Regular
meetings shall be held at 12:15 (lunch). There shall be a
minimum of two (2) times per month during the regular
academic year. Additional regular meetings can be planned
at the discretion of a majority of the membership. The
regular meetings shall be called to order by either the
President or Vice President.
Section 2:
Special
meetings can be called by either the President or the Vice
President when circumstances dictate.
Article VIII: Amendments
Section 1:
This
constitution shall be amended by a vote of 3/4 majority of
the membership at any regular.
Section 2:
Provision for advance
notice of amendment shall be as follows:
A.
All notifications must be completed two (2) full
weeks prior to scheduled vote.
B.
All current members shall be notified of the time and
place of the intended vote.
C.
A copy of the exact text to be voted upon must be
made available in both an electronic and printed format
easily accessible by the membership. |
