Philanthropy
Gerontology
In
1954, Sigma Kappa became the first national sorority to
recognize the need for continued, comprehensive work in the
field of gerontology, the scientific study of aging and the
problems of the old. This is a relatively new field of
social service that began as a result of increased life
expectancy. To assist and benefit the elderly, collegiate
and alumnae members volunteer their time through various
programs, such as Meals on Wheels and service in geriatric
wards.
Alzheimer’s
In 1984, Sigma Kappa added an
emphasis on Alzheimer's Disease to its gerontology program,
and is now the third largest contributor to the Alzheimer's
Association. Not only is Sigma Kappa Sorority dedicated to
educating its members about the disease, but as part of the
Sigma Kappa Foundation's Alzheimer's Disease and Research
Grant Program, the Foundation has contributed over half a
million dollars in research grants to doctors and
scientists trying to fight this disease, making them one of
the nation's leading contributors to Alzheimer's Disease
prevention, research, and treatment efforts.
Maine
Sea Coast Missionary Society
In honor of the five founders, the
Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society was chosen in 1918 as
the Sorority's first national philanthropy. The Mission's
purpose is to help families on the small Maine coastal
communities and islands.
Inherit
the Earth
Adopted in 1992, Inherit the Earth
is Sigma Kappa's national gerontology service project,
which not only combines its interest in senior citizens
with an interest in the environment, but also raises
awareness of environmental issues and solutions. Through
Inherit the Earth, collegians, alumnae and older citizens
work together to improve local environments.
