An account of the exploits of the Flamebringers,
the Questriders, and the Company of the Raven,
as well as a historical account of events in the Flanaess.
An AD&D campaign set in the World of Greyhawk. All
dates in red and by the Common Year (CY) reckoning. Map locations (using the Darlene map from the 1980 folio and 1983 boxed
set), module codes, references,
and adventure sources, as
well as information not known to the characters at
the time of the entry, appear in [brackets]. Monsters
are listed under their proper (D&D) names, even though the
characters may not know the proper terminology at the time of
the encounter, to save space. Spells and most magic items, as
well as names of ships and books, are noted in italics. If an
NPC’s race is not mentioned, he/she is assumed to be human.
Weather conditions are noted on days where precipitation occurs.
If an illustration for an NPC, item, or place exists, it is shown in
{wavy brackets} in purple. Original DM - Brad Faith (1983-1985 CY). Current
DM and creator of this time line - Rob Vest (1985 to present). Two
works that I've found extremely helpful in compiling this are Steve
Wilson's GreyChrondex
and Taras Guarhoth's Timeline
of Aerdi Grand Princes and Overkings.

This group consists of the human ranger Arborius; the human druid EARTHRAMUS; Gerald the Seeker, a human priest of Celestian; Hilgaared, a human sorceress; and a halfling thief named Thodore Dobbins, all from the County of Ulek. They are also accompanied by the dwarven warrior HALIK, from the Pricipality of Ulek; and the elven fighter/ mage Kellin from the duchy of Ulek. They uncover a smuggling ring led by Sanbalet, a human illusionist, and Sigurd Snake-Eyes, a pirate captain [575]. Sanbalet is slain, but Snake-Eyes escapes. They rescue an aquatic elf fighter/ thief named Oceanus, who joins the party and tells them that the smugglers are selling weapons to a nearby tribe of lizard men in the Hool Marshes. | DANGER AT DUNWATER: [U2, hex V4-124] Arborius, EARTHRAMUS, Gerald, HALIK, Hilgaared, Kellin, and Oceanus enter Earthwomb, the lizard man stronghold. Zaganesar suspects the fish-devils are planning an attack on Saltmarsh soon, and asks the party to act as intermediaries in forging an alliance between the lizard men and the people of Saltmarsh. The party leaves with a lizard man envoy to Saltmarsh.
| THE FINAL ENEMY: [U3, hex W4-125] After much wrangling, the town council of Saltmarsh and the lizard men of Earthwomb agree to send EARTHRAMUS, HALIK, and the rest of the party to Scaleyrock to gather strategic information on the sahuagin. The party shortly returns with the information, allowing the alliance of Saltmarsh and Earthwomb to drive the sahuagin from Scaleyrock, and enabling the lizard men to retake their fortress. | ||

|
The Flamebringers are formed on a cold, cloudy day in Greyhawk City, at the Green Dragon Inn, where they have been brought together by Almax, the blue archmage. The founding members are the human druid EARTHRAMUS [578], of the County of Ulek; his friend, SALDROM, a warrior from Melnibone, a kingdom in another crystal sphere; NANOLTH, a barbaric elven warrior from Selkari, a land on the continent of Daethnak, also located in another sphere; his long-time adventuring companion, KAYLA, an elven thief from Elor, also on Daethnak; and CARLON [578], a human mage from parts unknown.
|
|
At the behest of Almax, the five leave Greyhawk and journey east, on foot, through the Cairn Hills, to investigate an ancient cairn shown on a map given to them by Almax.
|
|
|
The five seek shelter in a shallow cave in the Cairn Hills, due to an oncoming sleet storm, where they set up camp. A few hours later, during the storm, an elven warrior staggers into the cave seeking shelter. Much to Nanolth’s surprise, he sees that this is his Selkarian kinsman NACTON, who tells the party that he was on his way to Greyhawk City when he became lost in the storm. Nanolth quickly convinces the others to let Nacton join the group. The storm breaks late that night.
|
|
NIGHT OF THE GREY ONES: [Original adventure by Brad Faith] CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, NACTON, NANOLTH, and SALDROM encounter a marauding flock of vargouiles and follow the survivors to their lair, which turns out to be the cairn located on their map. The lair is also occupied by duergar. The six slay the inhabitants and ransack the lair.
|
|
Almax appears the next morning in their camp, just as a light snow begins to fall. He congratulates the six on completing the task he assigned them, and informs the group he has more work for them, including a special mission for NACTON. The archmage first spirits Nacton away with a teleportation spell, then teleports the founding members to the town of Restenford [460] on Lendore Isle, where the climate is much warmer.
|
|
THE SECRET OF BONE HILL: [L1, hex B-78] CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, NANOLTH, and SALDROM clear out a ruined, monster-filled castle atop Bone Hill [62], near Restenford. The five destroy bugbears, undead, a stone guardian, a grey ooze, and a spectator. They also slay the castle’s undead warlord, Arvis DuLac [169] and put the soul of the “living skeleton” Viracius Scath [259] to rest. Upon finding a magical blue staff among the treasure guarded by the grey ooze, Carlon has an epiphany, and devotes his life to the worship of the chaos lord, Arioch. They also have their first encounter with the drow archmage Alcaro, an old enemy of Almax. Alcaro teleports away before the Flamebringers have a chance to melee. After clearing out the ruin, Almax suggests they purchase the property and restore the castle, using the treasure recovered during the adventure, and a loan from the wizard. [The castle will eventually be known as Flamebringer Keep, and serve as their first base of operations.]
|
|
Grellus, Baron of Restenford, is assassinated in his sleep by the assassin Tellish. | L2
|
|
THE ASSASSIN’S KNOT: [L2, hex B-78] CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, NANOLTH, and SALDROM are hired by Pelltar, court mage to the royal family of Restenford, to investigate the murder of the Baron. They are told to travel to the neighboring town of Garotten, where they are to seek out three different suspects and determine which is responsible for the murder. | L2
|
|
|
The Flamebringers leave Restenford that morning, and arrive that evening in Garotten. | L2
|
|
The five begin their covert investigation of the three suspects: Abraham d’Farmin, innkeeper of the House of Abraham; Harper, the eccentric high priest of Osprem (goddess of the waves); and Balmorrow, owner of the Theater of the Mystic Celebration. Little progress is made, but none of the three suspects seem likely murderers. | L2
|
|
Baroness Fairwind of Restenford, Grellus’ widow, is assassinated in her sleep by Tellish. | L2
|
|
News of the Baroness Fairwind's murder reaches the Flamebringers in Garotten. They resolve to work harder. | L2
|
|
The Flamebringers deduce that the three suspects are innocent and the “evidence” implicating them was planted. The underground Garotten assassins guild is suspected.
|
|
The party suspects the local government may be involved. They slip into the mayor’s manor that night, where their suspicions are realized. They discover disguises and other evidence in Tellish’s (the mayor’s closest advisor) room implicating him in the murders. They find evidence that he was hired by Qualton, high priest of Phaulkon in Restenford, to slay the Baron and Baroness in order that the priest might marry their daughter, Andrella, and become Baron Restenford himself! They also find evidence of mayor Arrness’s involvement in the assassins guild. They then proceed to slay Tellish, the mayor, and the other guild members. In the mayor’s chambers, they discover evidence that she planned to have Tellish assassinate Andrella and Qualton after their marriage so that she might take Restenford for herself. They also discover a letter from Qualton announcing his marriage to Andrella the next day. The party takes the documents and leaves immediately for Restenford. | L2
|
|
The Flamebringers return to Restenford and turn the evidence over to Andrella, but Qualton, apparently one step ahead of the party, is nowhere to be found. Investigating his quarters at the abbey, they find evidence that he was an agent of the Great Kingdom, and that he also did some dealing in slavery. Several letters from a man named “Tancreed” detailing the sale of young sacrificial victims to Qualton are found. These letters are stamped with a symbol featuring nine manacles. Through other letters, the party deduces that Qualton has another base of operations in the town of Roland in the Gull Cliffs of the Great Kingdom of Aerdy. Andrella promises a reward for his head.
|
|
On a cool, windy day, CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, NANOLTH, and SALDROM leave Restenford aboard the ship, the Wavecutter.
|
|
|
The Flamebringers reach Roland and assume pseudonyms to protect their identity in this hostile land. CARLON as Merlyne, EARTHRAMUS as Alanahn, KAYLA as Ariel, NANOLTH as Kaynon, and SALDROM as Elrick. They begin their quest for Qualton.
|
|
The Flamebringers find Qualton and slay him, and take his Restenford chain of office as proof of his death. Around his neck, they find an unusual amulet in the shape of an open hand with an eye in its palm. A witness to the combat calls the city guard, and the five flee Roland on stolen horses, right in the middle of a massive thunderstorm.
|
|
Under a heavy fog, the Flamebringers leave the Gull Cliffs behind.
|
|
The Flamebringers reach The Grandwood Forest. They abandon their horses and enter the wood.
|
|
FOREST OF DOOM: CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, NANOLTH, and SALDROM discover a fortress carved from a huge hollowed-out sycamore in the Grandwood [hex S-71]. Within they find a large contingent of drow, and their bugbear and quaggoth servitors. On the second level of the fortress, the Flamebringers discover a large number of prisoners, of whom only one is not broken. This is MALIN-KAY MACANAW, a human ranger from Daethnak. Malin informs the others that she was on a mission for Almax when she was captured. Shortly after Malin joins the party, a mysterious shadow creature enters Saldrom’s body and the warrior vanishes [this was a shadow-stalker sent by the drow mage Alcaro]. The remaining five then discover a pool of shimmering liquid, which acts as a mirror of opposition. The party defeats their magical duplicates with the help of Carlon’s dark god, Arioch. On the top level of the fortress, the party encounter and slay the drow commander, Erihn, and his consort, Meronal. After the drow are defeated, Alcaro appears once more [see 1.5-8.579], and informs the party that he has plans for their friend. The dark elf swears revenge for the slaying of his kinsmen before his astral form vanishes. The party then searches the fortress for SALDROM, but he is nowhere to be found. | DR#73

CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, MALIN-KAY MACANAW, and NANOLTH reach the Mikar River in the Grandwood. The five build a raft and head downstream.

|
FORTRESS OF THE DRETCH: CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, KAYLA, MALIN-KAY MACANAW, and NANOLTH discover a huge wooden fortress straddling the Mikar River in the Grandwood [hex T-72]. The place is inhabited by demons (dretch) serving the Overking. The five loot the fortress and destroy the dretch and the other inhabitants. | BF
|
|
The Flamebrigers exit the Grandwood and abandon the raft. A heavy rain has been falling all day. MALIN-KAY MACANAW leaves the group, heading west to complete her mission for Almax. KAYLA joins her. The others want to go as well, but Malin refuses, telling them it’s a mission of stealth, and more than two is too many. The others then journey south, on foot, slogging through the mud.

|
CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH journey south, through the See of Medegia, a province of the Great Kingdom.
|
|
CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH reach the port city of Pontylver, capital of Medegia. They decide to lie low there for a few days. They assume it’s unlikely they’ll be recognized, as Pontylver is quite a distance from Roland.
|
|
While in the Pontylver marketplace, the three are approached by three city guards who recognize the Flamebringers from wanted posters. The three are ordered to surrender. They refuse and melee with the guards, slaying two. More guards arrive and CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH flee these guards, and lose them with the help of a mysterious stranger with pitch-black skin, like that of a dark elf. He identifies himself as Tharak, a priest of Phaulkon the wind god. With his aid, they stow away on an odd-looking ship named the Hell’s Destiny [actually a spelljamming hammership]. The ship leaves port within minutes of their arrival.

After a day at sea, the ship takes to the air, much to the party’s surprise!

The ship enters a magical portal in the Grinder (the huge asteroid sphere surrounding Oerth, the sun, and the moons) leading to the ocean of the world of Mystara. | X1

The Hell’s Destiny reaches Ierendi, capital of the island nation of Ierendi. CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH, with Tharak, sneak off the ship at nightfall. Luckily, Tharak has coins of the realm, and they are able to spend the night in an inn. Tharak tells the others they can return to the Hell’s Destiny the next day and perhaps buy passage back to Oerth, by serving as crewmen.

The four return to the docks that morning, but the Hell’s Destiny has already left. Tharak tells them he knows of someone who can perhaps help them, but he lives on the mainland, several days away. Tharak is going there anyway, and invites the Flamebringers to come along. Unfortunately, he only has enough gold to pay for his passage, and they may have to work for theirs.

The Blue Velvet reaches Specularum, capitol of the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, and the four disembark. CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH are discharged from their service with a small wage. In the city, the four rent rooms at the Flying Hamhock Tavern, where they make the acquaintance of the owner, Fyodor Karamazov. | DNG#13 |

CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH, along with Tharak, reach the famed Keep on the Borderlands. There Tharak introduces them to the lord of the keep, the elven warrior/mage Fingolfin, who offers to help the Flamebringers find a way back to Greyspace if they will perform a mission for him. They are asked to rescue a friend of his, the merchant Bargus Loom, from Baron Von Gorf, a bandit lord occupying a abandoned watchtower a days journey from the keep. In addition, Fingolfin offers the Flamebringers a substantial amount of gold if they end the menace of Von Gorf as well. The three companions agree, and Fingolfin tells them he will furnish them with supplies and horses, and that they will leave at dawn the next morning, joined by two of his agents. After the audience with Fingolfin, the three ask Tharak to join them on their mission, but he refuses, claiming other business. Tharak does tell them that his brother is one of the agents mentioned by Fingolfin. | B2
|
|
CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, and NANOLTH are joined by Fingolfin’s agents: ELOOM, a halfling warrior/burglar from The Five Shires, a neighboring land; and Tharak’s brother, the ninja KIRIGI, a masked, silent human from parts unknown, with coal-black skin like Tharak. The five leave the keep on horseback.
|
|
HEADSGONE TOWER: CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, ELOOM, KIRIGI, and NANOLTH reach the tower before dawn, and sneak in while it’s still dark. Once in, they rescue Bargus Loom, who leaves immediately with KIRIGI, who was assigned to escort him back to the Keep. The rest of the party stays behind in the tower, where they slay Baron Von Gorf and rout his men. | RV
|
|
On their way back to the Keep, CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, ELOOM, and NANOLTH are re-joined by Tharak [actually a slaver in disguise]. At an inopportune moment, “Tharak” takes the party by surprise and knocks them unconscious with a powerful spell, dropping his illusory disguise just before they pass out. The four are shackled, gagged, loaded into wagons, and taken overland to the kingdom of Thyatis.
|
|
In Thyatis, capital of the same nation, the four are auctioned off as slaves. CARLON is sold to Harfor Strongarm, a human barbarian chieftain from Zeaburg, capitol of the northern kingdom of Ostland; EARTHRAMUS to the human Orrin Devinair, head of a wealthy Ierendian family; ELOOM to the human sorceress Calania Silverfrost of Glantri; and Nanolth to Calistus Elistes, a human merchant in Thyatis.
|
|
Harfor sails for Zeaburg with CARLON; Orrin sails for Ierendi with EARTHRAMUS; Calania teleports ELOOM to Glantri City, where he is forced to wear a magical slave collar and serve as her houseboy; and NANOLTH is taken by Calistus to the Arena of Thyatis, where he begins training as a gladiator under the cruel whip of the human arena master, Jubal Marcellus.
|
|
|
EARTHRAMUS arrives in Ierendi, where he is put to work tending Orrin Devinar’s vast gardens. To prevent him from using spells, Devinar has Earthramus drugged daily with a potion which renders him unable to speak.
|
|
CARLON arrives in Zeaburg, where he is forced to work as a scribe, translating a book of ancient Sueloise epics, which Harfor recently acquired on a raid. Carlon is given a potion to render him speechless, similar to that used on Earthramus.
|
|
EARTHRAMUS escapes Devinar with the help of Elthrazin, a human mage with coal-black skin, who claims to be a brother of Tharak and Kirigi. Elthrazin claims he was sent to rescue Earthramus by Almax. The two stow away on a ship bound for Specularum, the Hard Luck.
|
|
The Hard Luck reaches Specularum. Elthrazin tells EARTHRAMUS to make his way to the city of Ylaruam, northeast in the midst of the Alasiyan Desert, and wait for the others to arrive. The druid stays that night at the Flying Hamhock Tavern. [G.3.579]

NANOLTH reaches
the Thyatian city of Biazzan. While
relaxing in a tavern, he meets GILITAR, a human rogue,
who recognizes Nanolth as an escaped slave by the markings
from the slave collar he was forced to wear. Gilitar
tells Nanolth that he’s tracking an evil priest and his war
band, who are camped a few miles from town. Gilitar offers to
share the war band’s gold if Nanolth will help him in eliminating
them. Nanolth agrees, and the two leave Biazzan on stolen horses.
Upon finding the camp, they ambush the priest and his minions, slaying
them all. After looting the bodies, the pair return to Biazzan and release
the stolen horses.
EARTHRAMUS reaches Selenica, a city in the Republic of Darokin, where he meets Clay of the East Woods, a half-elven ranger from Alfheim, an elven kingdom to the north. |

Almax visits CARLON, EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, NANOLTH, Clay, and Drebb in Ylaruam. The archmage tells Carlon, Earthramus, and Nanolth that he had lost track of their whereabouts when they first left Oerth. By the time he had divined their location, they had already been captured by the slaver. Unable to intervene directly at this time, Almax asked his old friend Fingolfin for aid, who sent Kirigi, Elthrazin, Tharak, and Helmar to help them escape. The archmage tells them to continue waiting in Ylaruam for another month, which should allow ample time for Eloom to arrive, because Fingolfin wants him to return to Oerth with the others. |

Almax arrives at
The Black Veil. He teleports the entire
group to Specularum, and tells them to go to Minrothad,
capitol of the island nation of the Minrothad Guilds.
The archmage vanishes once more, leaving the
Flamebringers on their own. The party spends
that night at the Flying Hamhock Tavern. [G.3.579;

While at the dockyards
with Earthramus, Eloom, Gilitar, and Nanolth,
CARLON uses a charm spell to make a local shipwright
hand over his brand-new drakkar to the party. Gilitar names
the ship Amroth’s Desire. Elthrazin,
Clay, and Drebb then introduce them to Algild, a ship
captain and agent of Fingolfin, who offers to sail their ship
to Minrothad and supply them with crew. They agree, and CARLON,
EARTHRAMUS, ELOOM, GILITAR, NANOLTH, and Elthrazin leave Specularum
that afternoon. Clay and Drebb remain in Specularum.

CARLON, EARTHRAMUS,
ELOOM, GILITAR, NANOLTH, and Elthrazin leave Minrothad
aboard the Hell’s Destiny. Over the next
few days, the party becomes familiar with many members of
the ship’s crew, including: Wade Garrett, the ship’s human
captain. They also briefly encounter Weregild, the ship’s
helmsman - a mysterious robed and cowled figure, who
never speaks and whose face (and other body parts) remains
covered. |

Eagle Crest, the estate of the elf lord Aladier, Gilitar’s
mentor, near the city of Lo Reltarma on Lendore Isle.
Aladier invites the passengers and crew to spend a few days
recuperating at his home. Elthrazin graciously refuses, claiming
business in nearby Lo Reltarma, and leaves.

Aladier hires the party to safely deliver a valuable
tome to Felis Arn, a human sage residing in the city of
Gryrax, capital of the Principality

Almax appears that morning in Gryrax. He tells the Flamebringers that the shooting star is an omen predicted ages ago by the sages of the Tower of the Heavens [139], an astrological observatory located in the westernmost portion of the Drachensgrab Hills to the East [271]. He tells EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH to journey there as soon as possible to learn more of the omen. Almax also tells them the sages may be able to consult the stars to learn more of Saldrom’s whereabouts. The archmage informs CARLON that he has another mission for him, and the two teleport away. EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH leave Gryrax that afternoon on horseback.
CARLON is teleported outside the village of Redenbop, Keoland, located in the Barony of Westgate1[see LGJ1.ibc], in the southern Good Hills [hex A5-120]. Almax instructs him to enter the village tavern and wait. Once there, the young mage reunites with his old adventuring comrades, the gnome illusionist/ thief, SNORT, and the half-elven ranger, GOLFER [578]. The pair are part of an adventuring party consisting of Beska Miltar, a human mage; Sho-Rembo, an elven warrior; and Seeful the Unforgiving, a human priest of Boccob, the god of magic. The party is led by a mysterious masked, hooded figure in black, known only as the MYSTICAL ONE, who appears to be a priest of Nerull or some other god of death. That night, the party meets with Orlik, the village elder, who tells them that many villagers have disappeared at night over the past few weeks. He feels that a nearby ruin known as the Dungeon of Pools plays a part in the troubles, and asks the group to investigate. Orlik then relates a tale of his youth when another adventuring group went into the ruin, and only one returned, blinded. The man’s name was Lassdon, who spent the remainder of his life in the village as a poet and storyteller [497]. Orlik ends the night by reciting Lassdon’s poem about the Dungeon of Pools. |

CARLON, GOLFER, THE MYSTICAL ONE, SNORT, Beska Miltar, Seeful the Unforgiving, and Sho-Rembo discover the ruin is inhabited by a cult of Orcus, the demon prince of the undead, and that the villagers were being sacrificed and transformed into zombies. The party destroys the cult, Beska, Seeful, and Sho-Rembo are slain, and Golfer’s nose is cut off by a wildly swinging zombie. The survivors discover the many pools of colored water the dungeon is named for, and learn that drinking from one of them turns their skin a random color and bestows magical powers upon the drinker. Snort turns pink and gains limited healing ability; Golfer turns brown and gains the ability to detect magic; and the Mystical One turns grey. EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH reach the city of Havenhill, in the Principality of Ulek. |

The party reaches Derwyth’s home, Cwm Cernant,
and break bread with the druid, a bearded half elf. They give Derwyth
the bestiary in return for information on the shooting star’s
location. The druid invites them to spend the night at his
home, as it will take him until morning to divine the star’s location. |
|
| 9.13 |
Derwyth gives the party the estimated location
for the star, a rocky area about a day’s journey away, only traversable
by foot. The Flamebringers leave their horses with Derwyth and leave
Cwm Cernant. |
|
| 9.14 |
ALADRIN, EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH
follow Derwyth’s directions to an ancient, hillside cavern,
which is inhabited by a tribe of derro - pale, dwarf-like
evil humanoids. The party discovers that the meteorite
has crashed into the cavern, causing immense damage. The
four defeat the surviving derro and recover the meteorite. |
|
| 9.15 |
The party encounters and befriends a group of hunters who are camped near a great dam in the river, built by giant beavers. |
|
| 9.16 |
The four are ambushed that night in camp
by Sion, an evil shade [a servant of a renegade wizard
from the Tower of the Heavens], and his shadow mastiff and
pet raven. The shade is nearly slain by the party before escaping. |
|
| 9.17 |
The Flamebringers reach the Tower of the
Heavens, set upon a small island in the middle of the Jewel
River. They meet the monk Hadley, of the Order of the Night Sky
[168], who also
works as the ferryman to the Tower. Hadley tells them that the Elder
Sage of the Tower, Shalfey, has been usurped and barred in his chambers
by his second-in-command, Piyarz, the Tutor, who was
assisted by the pupil sages Lurg, Porro, and Cipolla. The
party agrees to rescue Shalfey. They decide to pose as travelers
seeking advice, and spend the night in the hostel adjacent
to the Tower, run by a man named Auberge. |
|
| 9.18 |
At dawn, Auberge informs the sages that a group
of travelers seeks an audience. At noon, ALADRIN,
EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH are called to the Tower. Following
Hadley’s advice from the night before, the party attacks
as soon as the first sage appears. It turns out to be
the pupil sage, Lurg. Lurg is slain along with his red garbed
bodyguards, and eleven gnomes who guard the tower proper.
They also slay a stone guardian, two monks garbed in yellow,
and two more garbed in blue. Finally, they encounter the pupil
sages Porro and Cipola, led by the Tutor Piyarz, defended by
three monks in black. Aladrin, Gilitar, and Nanolth slay the monks
and pupil sages, while Earthramus single-handedly slays Piyarz
in magical combat (using a summon insects spell) after the Tutor
incapacitated the rest of the party. About Piyarz’s neck, Earthramus
finds an amulet depicting an eye held in a hand - similar to
the one he and Nanolth discovered on Qualton of Restenford [2.12.579]. The
druid takes the amulet for further research. The
Flamebringers go on to rescue Shalfey and give him the
meteorite. The Elder Sage tells the party to take the meteorite
to the Forge of the Kagu-Svirfnebli, a deep dwarven outpost
in the Drachengrabs, and exchange the rock for four mystic
tomes in their possession, which the party must bring back
to Shalfey. The group spends that night in the hostel before
setting out the next morning. |
|
| 9.19 |
ALADRIN, EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH
leave the Tower of the Heavens. |
|
| 9.21 |
The party reaches the Forge of the Kagu-Svirfnebli
[287]. They slay
many gibberling attackers, who are mounted on tiny
horses [minimals]. The gibberlings are used by the deep
gnomes as slaves. The four also succeed in destroying a
svirfnebli war machine which attacked them. Finally, the svirfnebli
appear, and a parley takes place. The gnomes gladly agree
to the exchange, giving the Flamebringers the books in return
for the meteorite. The Flamebringers take the books and leave
the Forge. |
|
| 9.23 |
That
morning, ALADRIN, EARTHRAMUS, GILITAR, and NANOLTH
arrive back at the Tower of the Heavens, where they
present the mystic tomes to Shalfi, who rewards them with
gold, and tells Earthramus and Nanolth that their friend
will soon be found in a “pit surrounded by darkness.” They
bid farewell to the Elder Sage, and return to the neighboring
hostel. Soon, Almax appears in their room and bids them
gather their gear. The archmage then transports them in
a ball of green energy to a nearby hilltop overlooking the entire
region. Almax points out a rocky hillside miles away in the
direction of the Forge of the Kagu-Svirfnebli. There he tells
them lies the cave of two red dragons, Grisdelfawr and Pyrofenix,
imprisoned in stasis in their lair (with their hoard) years ago
by the Elder Sage of the Tower [504]. Suddenly,
there is a large explosion from the Forge, and within moments,
the dragons burst from their lair, apparently very angry.
The Flamebringers and their mentor watch in awe as the winged
beasts fly straight for the Tower of the Heavens and proceed to
destroy it and its inhabitants. Aladrin, Gilitar, and Nanolth
wonder at Almax’s inaction. Earthramus, however comes to the conclusion
that the dragons must destroy the Tower in order to preserve the
Balance. Almax confirms the druid’s thoughts, explaining that
the mystic tomes - the Books of Prophecy - were powerful artifacts
of Light and had to be destroyed because their use would tip the
scales too far in Good’s favor. However, with the dragons’ release,
Darkness has gained a new foothold, and it is up to the Flamebringers
to return the Balance to its previous position. The five return
their gaze to the dragons. After demolishing the Tower, the beasts
fly off to lay waste to the surrounding region. Almax then gives Earthramus
a very strange object. It looks like a fist-sized blue sphere with
several sharp blades radiating from it in a circle. The archmage
tells the party that it’s called the “Dragonstar,” and it will help
them destroy the dragons. Upon inquiring to its use, Almax tells the
Flamebringers that the Dragonstar is capable of nearly anything,
but it is up to them to discover how it works. The wizard then vanishes,
leaving the four alone. |
|
| 9.24 |
After spending the night in the dragons’
lair, ALADRIN, EARTHRAMUS, and GILITAR divide the treasure
between themselves. Among the items, Aladrin finds an elven
cloak and Gilitar finds a replacement for his lost sword. They
load as much of the hoard as possible into Gilitar’s pouch of
holding, secure the lair, and leave for Cwm Cernant to check on
Derwyth and recover their horses. |
|
| 9.25 |
The three reach the hunters’ camp they’d
visited over a week earlier [9.15.579] only
to find nothing but a ruin, apparently a target of
Grisdelfawr and Pyrofenix’s rampage. |
|
| 9.26 |
They leave the ruined encampment.
|
|
| 9.27 |
ALADRIN, EARTHRAMUS, and GILITAR reach Derwyth’s
home. Luckily, Derwyth and his companion animals
are okay. However, much to their dismay, they learn
that the dragons ate their horses [see 9.23.579]
while they were out grazing. That night, the
Flamebringers discuss their next course of action.
Earthramus tells Aladrin and Gilitar that he has spoken
with Derwyth, and that they are leaving Cwm Cernant tomorrow
to attend a druidic council in the central Drachensgrab Hills,
where the young druid, sponsored by Derwyth, will seek admittance
into his order’s enigmatic “Fifth Circle.” Earthramus explains
that if he is admitted, his training could take several weeks
to complete. Derwyth suggests that Aladrin and Gilitar spend the
next few weeks in Highport, a rowdy city a few days away on the northern
coast of the humanoid-controlled Pomarj, for some much needed
rest and relaxation. He recommends they stay at an inn called the
Lazy Dwarf, owned by his old friend, Ulik Goblinskinner. Earthramus
asks the pair to wait there until he has completed his training,
when he will join them. |
