IN CLASS - Computer Club
Kay started
a computer club, and for a while she was the only member. She planned to have each member find two new
members each month. By the end of the
first month she had found two new members.
If her plan is carried out, how many members will the club have at the
end of 6 months?
IN CLASS -
A gift shop
chain in the Southwest presently sells miniature cactus gardens for $20
each. It costs the chain $10 per garden
for materials, assembling, and packaging.
The chain’s management is considering changing the price per garden to
improve total profits from the gardens.
At the present price the chain sells 200/wk. Marketing consultants have told the chain
that for each decrease of $1 in the present selling price, the chain can sell 5
additional gardens above the 200.
Similarly, for each $ increase in the selling price, the chain will sell
5 gardens few than the 200. (For
example, at a price of $21 each, the chain will sell 195; at a price of $22
each, the chain will sell 190; and so on.)
Management wants to know whether it should raise or lower the selling
price and by how much in order that it’s total income from the gardens will be
as large as possible.

IN CLASS – Yale Record Club
Yale Record Club made me an offer I
couldn’t refuse. For their cheep, low
price I could buy millions of records, tapes, and compact discs (CDs) and save
millions of dollars. Well, anyway, I
joined. The first month I wanted (and
bought) 3 CDs and the cost was $24.84.
The second month I order 5 for a total of $38.82. Did I mention that the cost covered the CDs
and the shipping and handling? Anyway,
for $31.83, I bought 4 CDs the next month.
I paid $17.85 for 2 discs the next month. I looked through their catalog and picked out
38 more CDs that I wanted to buy sometime.
If I buy all 38 at once, then I only pay the shipping and handling fee 1
time. On the other hand, if I buy them
in smaller groups, well ... What I
really need to know is, how much would it cost to buy all 38 CDs as one order?
Also, what
is the cost of just 1 CD (no shipping and handling)?
What is the
cost of shipping and handling?
Assignment - POD – Sheet Cake
Andrew’s
cake measures 18 inches by 20 inches.
The cake sat on the table in front of Andrew with the 18-inch sides on
the left and right. Andrew cut off
pieces of the cake measuring 2 inches by 2 inches and served them to the guests
at his party. His friends all like
sugar, so he cut off side pieces, starting at the bottom right, and worked his
way clockwise all the way around the cake.
After he cut off the last side piece, he continued cutting and serving
in a clockwise spiral starting from the bottom right. What was the original location of the last
piece he served?
