Chapter 11–
Work Backwards – Day 2
POD - Invest That Money!
A
businesswoman went to the bank and sent half of her money to a
stockbroker. Other than a $2 parking fee
before she entered the bank and a $1 mail fee after she left the bank, this was
all the money she spent. On the second
day she returned to the bank and sent half of her remaining money to the
stockbroker. Once again, the only other
expenses were the $2 parking fee and the $1 mail fee. If she had $182 left, how much money did she
have before the trip to the bank on the first day? Note:
She pays the parking before she goes into the bank, and the mail fee is
after the ˝ of money is sent to the stockbroker.

IN CLASS – Slick Sam
Sam goes to
store with some money. If you give me
$50, I’ll spend 1/2 of all my money. He
does the same in a 2nd store and again in a 3rd store and
a 4th store. When he leaves
the 4th store he has $75. How
much money did he start with?
IN CLASS – Game Players
Three girls
play three rounds of a game. On each
round there are two winners and one loser.
The girl who loses on a round has to double the number of chips that
each of the other girls has by giving up some of her own chips. Each girl loses one round. At the end of three rounds, each girl has 40
chips. How many chips did each girl have
at the beginning of the game?
IN CLASS – Page 295, #12; Golf Clubs
POD – POD – Page 295, #11 Donuts
Four
customers came into a bakery. The first
one said, “Give me half of all the donuts you have left, plus half a donut
more.” The second customer said, “Give
me half of all the donuts you have left, plus half a donut more.” The third customer said, “Give me three
donuts.” The last customer said, “Give
me half of all the donuts you have left, plus half a donut more.” This last transaction emptied the display
case of doughnuts. How many donuts were
there to start with?
Hint: If the bakery had 11 donut, then ˝ the donuts
left plus ˝ a donut would be 5 ˝ + ˝ =
6, leaving 5 donuts. The ˝ the donuts
left and ˝ a donut works if the number of donuts left is odd.
