Maurader's Map

Materials: Graphing paper, straight edge, pencil and markers and yard stick (optional).
(If you don't have graphing paper, you can print this out on plain paper to simulate graphing paper.)
Step One: Measure the outer walls of your space with a yard stick. If you don't have a yard stick, you can measure it in your footsteps.
Step Two: Determine how many units one square of graphing paper will take up. (Example: One wall measures 15 yards. Two squares of graphing paper will represent one yard. So that wall will be shown as 30 squares long on the paper.) This is called "scaling". Write at the bottom the scale. (Example: 2 squares = 1 yard)
Step Three: Make up symbols to represent objects in your space. (Example: Your desk is represented by a square, a chair is a circle. Only pick out the major pieces in the room, don't draw in every little detail.)
Step Four: Make a key for your symbols in the corner of you paper so that it will make sense to other people.
Step Five: Using your pencil first, fill out the map with your room and the objects in it, using the symbols from the key.
Step Six: Trace over everything in marker when you are happy with your pencil version.
Step Seven: Put a title at the top of the map telling what space it is. (Example: Ms. Ohlmann's Classroom)
