(a.k.a. P100: Physics in the Modern World)
NOTE: If you are a CS Information Systems major who has had high school physics you should take Physics P202 or P222 instead of P100.
Students who have a disability that requires accommodations in the classroom should contact the Office of Disability Services by phone (941-2243) or email (mtspring@ius.edu) early in the semester so that their learning needs may be appropriately met. The student will need to provide documentation of the disability and if further documentation is needed, recommendations can be provided from the Office of Disability Services. Additional information about the Office of Disability Services may be obtained at: http://www.ius.edu/asc/disabilityservices/
Each Wed. we will start class with a short (15 min.) quiz over material covered since the last quiz (including lab material). There will be about 13 quizzes. The total number of points will be added up and divided by one less than the number of quizzes. This means that even if you only get a few points on a quiz it counts towards your total points. Makeup quizzes will only be given for excused absences.
During most classes we will work problems in groups of no more than three students. If you miss that day you can turn in the problems but you lose 10% per week. There will be a few takehome exercises that will count the same as group work.
We will do about 6 to 8 labs during the semester. The lab will be announced the class before the lab. A lab report will be due at the beginning of the next the class meeting. The format of the lab report will be discussed prior to each lab (some reports will be more formal than others). Late labs lose points at a rate of 10% per week. There will be NO lab make ups except under extreme circumstances.
A take home final will be handed out the last day of class consisting of questions and problems similar to the ones we will do during the course of the semester. The final will be due on the day of the scheduled final by 3:00 PM.
