Sound analysis for the undergraduate physics class really can be cheap and easy.

Excel: Create sounds, record sounds, analyze (FFT) sounds, create .wav files. Free software available.

Wavelet transforms: Time versus frequency plots (specrograms) provide more info than an FFT. Free software available.
