Q: How much time can I expect to spend each week working on C421?
A: The IUS guidelines state that you can expect to spend approximately 3 hours outside of class for every 1 hour in class. Since class meets for 4 hours and 40 minutes each week, you can expect to spend 14 hours per week outside of class working on C421. You should consider this time commitment when planning your weekly schedule, both academic and non-academic.
Q: I have a question. What is the best way to get it answered?
A: Ask! You should first email questions to your professor at: jfdoyle@ius.edu . Do not let one question keep you from working on the rest of the assignment! I usually read my mail several times per day and try to answer questions as quickly as possible. Don't wait until the last minute. I cannot guarantee an immediate response, so if you send me an email 30 minutes before the assignment is due, chances are that you'll be out of luck. Most questions can be answered via email.
Q: My question is one of the rare questions that cannot be answered via email. What should I do?
A: Come to my office hours, which are posted on the class web page. I will be happy to see you during those times.
Q: I am unable to attend your office hours but I still would like to see you. How can I do that?
A: Contact me and make an appointment. I am willing to make appointments for just about anytime that I am on campus and do not already have something else scheduled. Also, if my door is open, please come in, even if it is not my regularly scheduled office hour.
Q: I don't get X.
A: That's not really a question, that's more of a statement. In order for me to help you, I'd like you to help me. Phrase your question with "I tried to understand X by reading Y or trying to so Z but there is this C aspect of X that I am just not seeing." Tell me what you tried to do and what happened. This will help me to help you, and it will help you develop problem-solving skills in addition to enhancing your knowledge about X.
Q: Will you be covering all the material that we need to know in lecture?
A: No, there is too much material in this class for me to cover everything in lecture. You will be responsible for reading either in the text or online any material that is not covered in class. If you have questions about material on homework or exercise assignments, please send me an email or come to my office hours. I will be happy to assist you. There will be a few problems assigned on material that we have not yet covered in class and may not cover in class. You are still responsible for this material.
