Many students assume that the United States bore the brunt of the casualties of World War II. This misconception can be attributed to Hollywood and ethnocentrism. This lesson hopes to illustrate the sacrifices made by the other major countries involved in World War II.

Procedure:

1.        Students will be given a spreadsheet template in which to fill their data in.

2.        Ask students to estimate the civilian & military casualties suffered by the major countries involved in World War II.

3.        Tell students to research the actual deaths on the internet.

4.      Students will input their data and create a bar graph of civilian and military deaths.

5.      .It should look something like this when it is finished.

Follow up questions:

  1. Why did you choose the numbers you did when you estimated the death toll?
  2. What was your reaction when you discovered the true death toll?
  3. Why do you think most people underestimate the losses suffered by the Soviet Union?
