In work this symbol is the show hide button

This button is on the Standard Toolbar.

and is very useful when you are having problems formatting your work or you want to see what keys you have pressed.

Here are what the markers represent:

Symbol

Meaning

You have pressed the return key

You have pressed the spacebar.  These will appear between each word and will show if you have pressed the spacebar more than once.

Notice the green line.  This means there is a grammar mistake.  The rule is there should be only one space between words.

You have pressed the tab key.   This will indent at a default setting. (See below) You can change this setting under Format. If you see more than one of these it means you hit the tab more than once.

When using the bullet button or the numbering button the tab mark will automatically appear at a default setting.  You can change this is a default settings under Format.

This is not seen often.   It used when you want to keep the same formatting but on the next line.   This is referred to as a soft return.   To use a soft return you hold the shift and hit enter.

Changing Tab Settings:

Go to Format, Tab

This screen will appear:

You can adjust the tabs under the default tab settings or

You can click on the ruler above the document.
