Applied Mathematics in Business

Target audience:

Sophomores and juniors, mainly business/pre-business students and liberal arts majors

Description of the course:

A project-driven course in mathematical management science techniques

Special features of the course:

The course will use cooperative learning (peer instruction) and group projects to introduce topics from probability theory and management science, such as queueing theory,  time-series analysis or linear programming.  Students will work in small groups (3 or 4 students) to complete consulting projects with local businesses or agencies.  Mathematical topics will be taught as needed (in a "just-in-time" fashion); different mathematical topics may be chosen each time the course is offered, but will always include elementary probability theory and some elementary statistics.  Students will use spreadsheets (Excel) to model the problems they are trying to solve, and students will write and present reports based on their work.

(The course has been taught in Fall of 1998 and Spring of 2000.)
