Mrs. Diane Holz

I was born in Chicago, Illinois, and I have one sister--Barb. My dad

owned a business where he made custom leather furniture. However, it became

hard to get craftsmen to work for him so we moved to Tell City, IN when I

was in the 6th grade. I went to Jr. High and High School there. My fondest

memories were going to all the ball games and following the basketball and

football teams (we had really good teams in Tell City back then!). Also I loved my

years in the Tell City "Marching Marksmen"--the band. The highlight of my

years in the band is when we were invited to march in John Kennedy's

Inaugural Parade in Washington D.C. That was a really exciting experience.

A blizzard blew in the night before the parade and it got so cold that

before we got to the stand where the President was watching, our horns all

froze up and we couldn't play one note!!

I went on to college at I U in Bloomington and decided to go into

education. They assigned me to do my student teaching down in New Albany at

the old Mt. Tabor Elementary School. New Albany is where I met my husband

Nick. We lived in New Albany for a few years after we were married and then

found land out in Greenville and built our home and a small lake right

outside our back door. We have 3 children: Pete, Kevin, and Gretchen. We all enjoy

country life and love our lake for ice skating and swimming and fishing!

Mr. Steven Smith

It all began one dark and stormy November night in Wisconsin. The world

was almost to the 1/2 century mark when he was born. There is no marker in

Prairie du Chien to commemorate this event. The hospital has been converted

into a retirement home. No one knows anything about him in this small

town. His only mark is his name in the county records; child born to

Edward and Beverly Smith, name Steven M. Smith.

After two mostly uneventful years growing up in Wauzeka, Wisconsin,

Steve, his brother Dennis, and their mom and dad moved to New Albany,

Indiana. Here he grew stronger and learned that to be truly happy you must

help others.

At his elementary school, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, nothing

extraordinary happened. His only extra curricular activity was playing

football where he started on both offense and defense. His team won the district

title three years in a row!

Sundays were church and family days. In the

morning, as one of the main alter boys for the church, he arrived early for

mass to make sure every thing was in place. The most exciting thing was

his family increased by one more. Teresa, his sister, arrived. Yeah!!!

Moving into his high school days at Our Lady of Providence High

School, nothing much changed. He played football through his junior year,

joined the theater club (that was where he learned to run all the electronic

gadgets), and became an Explorer Scout. During his Scouting he became an

Eagle Scout, a Vigil member in The Order of the Arrow, and a camp leader at

Tunnel Mill Scout Reservation.

At college things really picked up. Here he met Linda Cobb--the

future Mrs. Smith. On his way to receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in

Education, he did his student teaching at Galena Elementary (room 205).

From this point it gets even more thrilling. That same year (1971) he was

hired to teach in the New Albany/Floyd School Corporation at Galena

Elementary. He packed up all of his teaching materials and made the

gigantic move to room 203 where he has been teaching for the past 26 years.

Steven M. Smith's family has grown to include three children;

Bryan, Benjamin, and Barbara. They now live in Floyd Knobs, Indiana.

Mrs. Barbara Dooley  (Retired, but one of the original founders of the IUS/Galena Project)

I have lived in Floyd County all my life. I was born and raised in Greenville. My father was the township trustee for many years. In the first eight years of school I had only 3 teachers. I went to New Albany High School and then on to Indiana State at Terre Haute.

My first teaching assignment was at Galena School - the three-room one in the heart of Galena. I had 3rd and 4th grades - a total of 42 kids. On a fair February day in 1963 the students loaded three school buses. We teachers got in our cars and we all drove down the road to our new school - a six-room brick building with a gym-cafeteria combination. We were in heaven. We even had carpet in the green room.

Since that February day, I have taught at Galena - a total of 33 years so far. I was out one year when my daughter, Joelle, was born. The school has grown so much in size and enrollment. I certainly do consider myself lucky to have started at Galena and having been able to continue here all these years. I have had such great students; worked with such wonderful people; and met some terrific parents over the years.

Mrs. Linda Hornung

Greetings from one of the fourth grade teachers of Galena Elementary School, which is located in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. My name is Linda Hornung and I have taught school for a number of years...more than twenty! Most of my experience has been with the third grade, but I spent a number of years in first grade, also. Although I have only taught at Galena for a few years, I have felt very welcomed and enjoy teaching my wonderful students!

I was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, and was one of the largest twins ever born at the hospital there! My brother is only one minute older than I am. He lives in Ohio now, and I miss him. I also have a sister who lives in Jeffersonville and an adopted brother from the country of Viet Nam who presently lives in Florida. He's nearly 35  years old-- and that's hard for me to believe, since we got him when he was only two! Time goes by rather quickly!!

Being from Florida as a youngster, I enjoyed warm weather until I was nine years old. My father was in the military, and as a result, we started to travel around the world. I feel very fortunate to have had a marvelous experience living and traveling all across Europe. We had the opportunity to visit Mexico and the Central American country of Panama, also.

While I came from Maryland before I arrived here, I now have lived in this area most of my life and truly love the beautiful terrain of Southern Indiana. Even though Europe was where I saw my first glorious snow and my first majestic mountains, I can honestly say that it is this area that has the most incredible autumns that I've ever witnessed. We are very fortunate to have the beauty of color and gently rolling hills of the Ohio Valley.

Now that I am married, my family and I live right next to a New Albany "trademark"...Mom and Pop's Cone Corner! Yummy!! My husband is a firefighter for New Albany. I have three terrific children--Michelle and Maria are my daughters and Casey is my only son. Michelle went to Nursing school, Casey went to Computer Electronics school, and Maria is in high school and enjoys playing the piano, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and dancing. Max (our dog) and Molly (our cat) are also a part of our family!

As you might have guessed, I keep very busy with my family. We are very active and love to go to watch our children in sports, at recitals, and any of their activities. My other interests are walking for exercise, reading, listening to all kinds of music--especially "oldies" and classical-- cooking gourmet meals (when I have time), and playing tennis.

Teaching has been most rewarding for me. I feel that there is no greater profession. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to teach the children that come into my room. They have given me a piece of the future...I have in some small way touched the future because I teach.
