Facts about the Ocean:

90% of all volcanic activity occurs in the ocean.

The highest tides in the world at the Bay of Fundy, which separates New Brunswick from Nova Scotia.

The ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface and contains 97% of the Earth's water.  Less than 1% of fresh water, and 2-3% contained in glaciers and ice caps.

If mined, all the gold suspended in the world's sea water would give each person on Earth 9 pounds.

At 39 degrees F, the temperature of almost all the deep ocean is only a few degrees above freezing.

If the ocean total salt content were dried, it would cover to the depth of 5 feet.

Baby whale jumps onto tourist boat

PORT ALLEN, Hawaii, Feb. 14, 2001--A 20-foot humpback whale leapt onto a whale-watching boat and broke a tourist knee, a tour officer said Wednesday.  The one year old whale slipped back into the water and swam away.  The boat had stopped and its passengers were eating when the whale emerged splashing about 75 yards away.  Moments later it resurfaced, landing on the back of the boat.
