Tiger |
|
| Appearance | The tiger is the largest member of the cat family. They have a long, thick, reddish coat with a white belly and white and black tail. The head, body, tail and limbs have narrow black, brown, or gray stripes. |
| Weight | 400-575 pounds |
| Habitat | The tiger may live in tropical rainforests, snow-covered forests, mangrove swamps, dry forests. |
| Food | Tigers eat mostly pigs, deer, antelope, buffalo and other large mammals. But they also may eat smaller mammals and birds. |
| Behavior | Tigers hunt alone. They stalk and attack from ambush. Their stripes help to camouflage by breaking up the outline of their bodies when hidden in tall grasses. |
| Population | ENDANGERED: There are between 3000 to 4000 Bengal tigers left. |
| Threats | Tigers rely on their surrounding habitat for camouflage. When farmers destroy that habitat, tigers cannot hide from prey, which also becomes scarcer with the loss of food and habitat. Also, tigers are hunted, because some of their body parts are used in traditional Asian medicines. |
