N341 Chapter 8 User Testing with a Paper Prototype

Modified

Overview

Chapter 7 of the Website Development text and class handouts discuss paper prototyping pages. Below are guidelines we will use in testing our paper prototype from Homework 2.

Test Scenarios

  1. Motive and goal of performing task (Open a trading account and buy 10 shares of IBM).
  2. Real data (stock price).
  3. System state when task begins (At Welcome page and without a registered trading account).
  4. Pages user will see during test (Welcome, registration, login, etc.)

Analysis

Exercise 1 - Test prototype

Use the prototype from Homework 2 for testing with each student playing one of the four roles:

  1. Author/Computer:
    • defines test scenario and writes on paper for facilitator:
      • Motive and goal of performing task (Open a trading account and buy 10 shares of IBM).
      • Real data (stock price).
      • System state when task begins (At Welcome page and with no trading account).
      • Pages user will see during test (Welcome, registration, login, etc.)
    • acts the computer role
  2. Facilitator:
    • Explains test purpose (motive and goal of performing task) and format of test.
    • Explains how to interact with prototype.
    • Describes the test scenario (the task to accomplish) to user.
    • Decides when to finish test based on a predetermined time limit (e.g. 2 minutes).
  3. User
    • Tests the prototype.
    • Offers criticism
  4. Observer
    • Records the test results; either written notes or video.
    • Not needed when stationary camera used.

Exercise 2 - Posttest

Continue taping the following posttest questions:

  • Facilitator asks whether user has questions or suggestions.
    • Closed-ended questions
      • What did you like best? least?
    • Open-ended questions
      • What improvements would make the site better?

Exercise 3 - Repeat test

Repeat until three tests have been completed.

  • Switch roles with the last user acting as computer and repeat Exercise 1 and 2.

Exercise 4 - Analysis

  • Team reviews the videotape.
    • Record on index cards any incident where user encounters difficulty.
    • Note the user, relevant page, difficulty encountered and feature of the interface involved.
  • Sort the note cards of all users into categories of difficulty encountered.
  • Rate each difficulty encountered at one of three levels such as 1="low", 2="medium", 3="high".
    • Compute the performance measure for the user interface by summing all difficulty ratings divided by the number of tests (users).
  • From posttest answers determine preference measures at one of three levels such as 1="low", 2="medium", 3="high".
    • Compute the preference measure for the user interface by summing all preference ratings divided by the number of tests (users).
