Funded by the Office of English Language Acquisition of the U.S.
Department of Education, the program builds on the IU Southeast School
of Education (SOE) “New Neighbors” Project (“Responding to the Needs of
our New Neighbors through Culturally Responsive Teachers”) launched in
2005. |
The holistic approach of the program includes a multi-layered
professional development program involving the SOE faculty, school
leaders, ESL/ENL instructors, regular classroom teachers (RTCs), school
psychologists, paraprofessionals, and all other support personnel in six
local schools. |
Part of this comprehensive approach is also a strong parent and community component as well as extra-curricular enrichment initiatives. All these endeavors should lead to responding to the educational needs of K-12 ELLs. |
Networking, cooperation, peer
coaching, and creative responses to the various challenges are essential
strategies for the success of the program. |
