Observations at Network Schools

Sharing and learning from peers at the networking schools is a critical strategy.

From the very beginning of our project implementation, teachers have traveled to different schools to observe their peers utilizing good teaching practices.

In-service Sessions FOR OTHER SCHOOL PERSONNEL

t

Networking and capacity building are essential strategies of the New Neighbors project. We understand that ALL the stakeholders need to take part in the success of ELs. Under the leadership of principals, teachers, all the staff and support personnel must gain understanding and skills for helping ELs succeed.

Hosted at the Education Support Center, New Albany-Floyd Schools, or at the GCS Administration Building, office personnel and other support staff receive professional training on topics related to their specific roles.

Ms. Angie Silvers

Ms. Angie Silver lead the first 90-minute event. She lead the reflection on cultural awareness, shared strategies, and provided materials to assist secretaries and paraprofessionals as they welcome ELs and their families to their schools.

The session provided everyone with hands-on opportunities to address culture, language and education.

School psychologists and speech therapists

Professional staff play an important role in the success of ELs. The New Neighbors plans include specialized professional development for these colleagues in order to provide them with additional tools to better serve ELs. Plans are designed annually.

Dr. Rebeca Martínez

In 2008 and 2009, Dr. Rebecca Martínez, Assistant Professor from IU Bloomington, lead a 2-hour in-service for school psychologists.

In 2009, Dr. Raquel Anderson, also from IU Bloomington, lead a 2-hour session for Speech pathologists.

I 2011, Ms. Gwen Snow, Assistant Principal at the ENL Newcomer Academy of Louisville, KY,  led two sessions directed to administrators of the Network schools.

Events are based on the assessment of the participants’ needs, on research-based best practices, and empirical data.

They addressed topics such as cultural competent assessments, issues on special education referrals, and much more.

Participants receive a wealth of resources and are able to discuss  issues pertinent to their role .

School Bus Drivers and Cafeteria Personnel

Special sessions are hold annually to assist school bus drivers, cafeteria personnel, and school nurses in building cultural competency to effectively interact and assist ELs. Ad-hoc materials are provided to them.
