Gioconda Guerra joined the team (fall 2010) acting as a socio-cultural specialist and parent liaison in the Network schools.

A needs-based curriculum has been developed for family education sessions, which take place in each network school. Family literacy is stressed and parallel sessions with children complement "parent nights."

Bilingual children's books are distributed to families during "parent nights" and community events. Sets of textbooks were donated by the Mexico consulate and have been made available to the Network schools.

Dozens of the PNC bilingual educational videos  were distributed among the Network schools.

Jackson Elementary, Seymour

In 2010, the Horseshoe Foundation provided specific funding for the family literacy program "Families Read, Kids Succeed," which is also bringing books to homes along with strategies and guidance for parents on how to promote reading and school success.

Dr. Gioconda Guerra, in coordination with school teachers, is delivering series of successful parent sessions at the Network schools.

Faculty ENL Professional Development

Near 80% of the IU Southeast education faculty has participated in professional development activities and made syllabi revisions to reflect best practices in ENL education.

They have also conducted workshops and participated in "brown bag" sessions with the goal of sharing their experiences and improvements with other colleagues.

The purpose is to address the needs of English Learners in different courses and in all education programs.

Following each seminar-workshop led by experts, faculty members of the School of Education revisit course syllabi, which are then tested in their respective courses.
