A.  Page 65 – Prob. #1 - THE SIDEWALK AROUND THE GARDEN

We have a garden that measures 17 feet by 20 feet.  We want to pour concrete for a 3-foot-wide sidewalk around the garden.  To make the forms for the concrete, we will need to buy some 2 X 4 inch lumber.  How many feet of lumber will we need just for the perimeter of the walk?  (Consider both the inside and the outside perimeter)

B.  Page 66 – Problem #5 - WAY TO SCORE

The Chicago Bears score 18 points in a football game.  In how many different ways can the Bears score these points?  Points are scored as follows:

          A safety is 2 points,

A field goal is 3 points,

          A touchdown is 6 points.

After a touchdown is scored, the team may get

1 extra point for a kick,

2 extra points for a 2-point conversion, or

0 points if they fail on either of the above.

C.  Page 103 – Problem #2 – THE BILLBOARD

Ed went to work for an advertising company after school and on Saturdays.  For his first assignment, he hired himself to create a billboard.  The billboard will be 20 feet high and will proclaim his love for Candy (the girl, not the sweets).  He decided that each letter should be 2 feet high and that there will be a 1/2-foot space between the bottom of one line of words and the top of the next line of words.  In addition, he wants borders measuring 1 ½ feet at both the top and the bottom of the billboard.  How many lines of words can Ed fit onto the billboard?

D.  Page 133 – Problem #5 – COMMIC OF THE MONTH

I subscribe to the Comic-of-the-Month Club.  Each month 1 can buy any number of the 48 titles offered by the club.  The first month I bought five comics for $3.07.  The second month I bought two comics for $1.72.  The next month I bought six of the club offerings for $3.52.  In May I bought three more for $2.17.  The club charges a fee for each comic and a fixed handling fee for the entire order (for any number of comics).  How much would it have cost to buy all 48 titles at the same time?

F.  Page 217 – Problem #3 – QUIT WHILE YOU CAN

Smoking has long been connected with serious diseases, such as lung cancer, emphysema, and heart disease.  Let’s estimate that for every cigarette a person smokes, he or she loses anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes of his or her life.  Assuming the worst (15 minutes of life lost for each cigarette), how much shorter would the life span be of someone who smoke two packs a day for 35 years? (Each pack contains 20 cigarettes.)  Answer in nearest tenth of a year.

G.  Page 274 – Problem #3 – KMRCL TV

A local TV station, KMRCL, plans its number of commercials based on what type of show is being broadcast.  Each commercial is a minute long.  On daytime TV, the station runs 18 commercials every hour and then drops the number down to 16 per how for the news. (Every day there are 8 hours of daytime programming and 2 hours of news.)  During KMRCL’s prime time, which is 3 hours per day, the station runs 12 commercials per hour.  During the late-night movies, KMRCL sells commercial time really cheap and runs 20 commercials per hour.  Late-night movies are shown for 6 hours each day.  The station’s “other” programming, which is on 5 hours per day, airs with 8 commercials per hour.  For the sake of simplicity, assume that for all seven days of the week each type of programming airs for the same number of hours just described.  Find how many hours per week KMRCL airs commercials.

H.  Page 298 – Problem #4 – DON’T FEED THE ANIMALS

For a camping trip, the five member Family family had brought many bags of peanuts for snacks.  Peanuts were everyone’s favorite, so they were well stocked.  Unfortunately, the campground was populated by various animals who also enjoyed an occasional peanut.  The first night, after the family went to bed, a raccoon visited their camp and ate five of the bags of peanuts they had brought.  The next day, the Familys ate one-third of the remaining bags.  That night, a beaver came to call and ate two more of the bags.  The next day, the Familys consumed one-fourth of the remaining bags for breakfast.  Then they took a boat trip, and they had to feed one bag of peanuts to each of their five dogs to get the dogs to quite down.  That night, an elephant from a nearby zoo came to the camp and ate four bags of peanuts.  The next day, each member of the Family family ate one-ninth of the remaining bags.  That night, a spotted owl ate half of the remaining bags.  The next day, there were only four bags left.  The Familys couldn’t decide how to split them among the five of them, so they fed them to the ducks.  How many bags of peanuts did the Familys bring with them on the camping trip?
