K300 Project 1-  Descriptive Statistics

Data due:  Wed 9/22 or Tues. 9/21                        Value: 25 pts[5 point penalty for each class late]

Objective: Experience with gathering and presenting data, i.e. descriptive statistics.

Use the web pages to find Birth Announcements.  Gather information on the birth weight of at least 110 new borns.  The location for Clark Memorial is http://www.clarkmemorial.org/births.asp and Baptist East is http://www.baptisteast.com/babynet/   Print a copy of your data.  Weight at birth will be in pounds and ounces.  These should all be converted to ounces.
Example:  6 lb.. 8 oz. = 6 X 16 + 8 = 104 oz..  and  8 lb.. 4 1/2 oz. = 8 X 16 + 4.5 = 132.5 oz.

When reporting the results requested, first give in ounces, then convert to pounds an ounces.

Example:  118.6 oz = 118.6 / 16 = 7.4125 which is 7 lb. and .4125 X 16 = 6.6 oz or 7 lb 6.6 oz.
    and  128.75 oz =128.75/16=8.046875 - 8 =.046875 X 16 = .75   or  8 lb.. 3/4 oz.

I.     A.  Enter the data into the calculator in a list named BABY, with a minimum of 110 entries.

        B.  Use the Sort feature of the TI-83 to arrange the data in increasing order.

        C.  Construct a Stem-and Leaf Plot of the weights.

        D.  Find the exact value of the Mean and Standard Deviation with the calculator.

        E.  Find two addition measures of the center:  Median, and Mode. Show any work necessary.

II.     A.  Construct a frequency table using the classes indicated:

Weight in Ounces Weight in Pounds Frequency Relative Frequency Cumulative Frequency
64.0-71.9 4 lb.- 4 lb. 7 oz
72.0-79.9 4 lb. 8 oz- 4 lb. 15 oz
80.0-87.9 5 lb. - 5 lb. 7 oz
88.0-95.9 5 lb. 8 oz- 5 lb. 15 oz
96.0-103.9 6 lb. - 6 lb. 7 oz
104.0-111.9 6 lb. 8 oz - 6 lb. 15 oz

    B.  Complete the Relative Frequency and Cumulative Frequency Columns.

    C.  Construct a Histogram.

    D.  Construct a Relative Frequency Histogram

    E.  Use the frequency table to find the mean and compare it to the mean computed from actual
values in part I. D. Show your work

    F.  Use the frequency table to find the Standard Deviation and compare it to the calculator
computed on in part I. D. Show your work.

    G.  If your frequency table and calculator values from parts I.D and II.E&F are different, why
          are they different?

III.     A.  Find Q1, Q2, D3, and P45. Show any work necessary.

          B.  Construct a Box Plot of the data. Show any work necessary.
