8.2  Inferences about Two Means:  Dependent Samples

Independent -  separate samples

Dependent  -  both samples same group,  ? before & after

                    - matched or paired data

Text has small samples so t-test

Assumptions and notation:     pg. 415

x- is "before"    and   y- is "after"

The "sign" of d is often surprising  ...

           EX: Losing weight    x=150,  y=140, so d=10

Which means  d  >  0  represents losing weight

Test Statistics:

Note:  In this text, , is generally 0

We'll do the test statistic with the calculator.

    Do with calculator
            Enter x-values as List 1
            Enter y-values as List 2
            Compute d=x-y in List 3 as List1-List2

Use t-test (#2 in STAT-TESTS) to calculate values

            ** Remember   List: L3

**  Samples are SMALL so use Table A-3  t-values

#8. c:  d > 0
=.05  d < 0
   :  d > 0
                                 Critical Value:  t = 1.796
