Digital Image & Video

We live in the so-called "digital age" yet for many students, there is little to no incorporation of digital tools into their daily education at school.  What a sad statement.  There is so much that can be done using digital cameras, digital video cameras, photo/video creation/editing programs, etc.  It is a shame that more educators don't use these tools more often.

Within this area of the course, we will look at using digital images and digital video as learning/assessment tools.  We will look at several programs that will allow students to use digital media in the classroom.  The two assignments within this section of the course are intended to assist you in thinking about how to incorporate these tools into your classroom.  While we will be learning how to create/edit digital images and videos, the more important aspect of these assignments will be in how you believe you can use these media within your own grade-level/subject areas.

Digital Image Assignment

The first assignment will be to use an image-editing program to create a representation of something that you might have your students create or something that you might create to use as a teaching tool within your classroom.  There is a lot of freedom within this assignment.  I am not interested in simply seeing how you have removed the redeye from an image.  I am more interested in seeing your creativity in incorporating this technology into your teaching and your students' learning.

In addition to actually editing an image, you will also provide a brief write-up of how you might incorporate the use of digital cameras or images into your classroom.

Use the digital image rubric as a guide in completing this assignment and to ensure it is submitted correctly for assessment purposes.

Digital Video Assignment

The second assignment will be to use a video camera and/or a video-editing program to create an example of something that you might have your students create or something that you might create to use as a teaching tool within your classroom.  Like the digital image assignment, there is a lot of freedom with this assignment.  Likewise, while I am interested in your final creation, I am also interested in the idea behind the creation.  That is, I am interested in seeing your thoughts on how to use digital video within the classroom to enhance your teaching and your students' learning.  Therefore, you will also provide a brief write-up of how to use this tool in your teaching.

Use the digital video rubric as a guide in completing this assignment and to ensure it is submitted correctly for assessment purposes (it is to be attached to your web page).  The video cannot be submitted as an attachment via Oncourse.
Examples can be found on both of the mock teacher web sites, as well as on YouTube, TeacherTube, or SchoolTube.  Here are two additional examples:
