Chihuahua Facts

Today I
purchased a small 4 month old Chihuahua. He is so adorable and I love him so much. I
named my baby Sachi, which means bliss-child in Japanese. Please read the Chihuahua facts and click the links below to
see his stats & more pictures of him. J
1. The Mexican name for the
breed is Chihuahueno.
2. The Chihuahua
will always be considered a Mexican breed no matter of the suspected ancient
roots. These include European and Asian descent.
3. The Chihuahua
is the world’s smallest dog. At maturity, they are generally between 2
to 6 pounds.
4. No wonder Chihuahuas
are so smart! They have the largest brain when compared to body
size of any breed of dog.
5. In 1904 the American Kennel Club registered its first Chihuahua, appropriately named Midget! There
are two varieties, the smooth coat and the long coat Chihuahua.
6. Small dogs such as the Chihuahua
were used in the world for centuries as hot water bottles! The
warm and cuddly animals were placed on sore and aching bodies where their
warmth and love helped to speed recovery.
7. The average life span is 13 to 15 years, with many living well into their
late teens.
8. Chihuahuas
are born with floppy ears which then begin to stand up when they are 3 to 4
months in age.
9. Trimming the vibrissae (whiskers) is often done for show dogs, but it
is preferable to leave them intact. They are important sensory organs
that help prevent damage to their eyes and face.
10. One of Chihuahua’s
favorite things in life is sunbathing. Make sure your Chihuahua's quarters have a patch of
sunlight to soak up during the day. Always provide shelter from too much sun.
It is interesting to note that Chihuahuas
with pink noses can be sunburned and even develop cancer. Because Chihuahuas can sometimes
not know when they've had too much sun, they can become dehydrated. Make sure
your Chi always has sufficient water.
