Computers have become an everyday part of life for many individuals. However, many people do not look towards their computers when they think of listening to music. There have been many reasons for this slow-moving trend to swing in the favor of the personal computer. The most recent technology to overtake the Web is the new audio format commonly known as MP3, MPEG audio Layer-3. This process is a new way of encoding music into your computer.

The main advantages to this new format are time and space. With the technology that was used before MP3, the average download time of an album was anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. With the new improvements in the MP3 format an album can be downloaded in as little as one tenth of that time. It also reduces the amount of space that album will take up on your computer's hardrive. Users are also able to customize their playing by using the extensive song lists found online. This creates a worldwide marketplace for music that users can only find in this format.

MP3 audio is made possible by compression. This format shrinks the audio file without losing any of its sound quality. After downloading, the song one can play it as many times as you would like, instantly.

One of the main issues that have arisen out of this new wave of music listneing is the right of the artists and the record companies. With this format being so widely used, MP3.com boasts over 200,000 visitors daily, the royalties of the artists are in debate. The ease of turning these MP3 files into a playable CD has many wondering what can be done about music piracy over the net. This topic is one that will have to be decided by the major players in the recording industry. However, the MP3 format is legal in that the artists have granted permission for you to hear at least part of their albums in this format. Also, it is legal for the individual to copy these songs for personal use, the problem however arises when these personal recordings are either sold or traded with others without permission.

In the early days of MP3, there were those who wanted to put a ban on this format. Today, that would be almost an impossible thing to do. There are already portable MP3 players that use no moving parts that can wear out or get dirty. There are also in dash components for vehicles on the market that allow you to program up to eight hours of music which can be changed with the help of your PC.

The MP3 format is a new way of listening to music. The emergence of a cheap and overly large supply of styles and types of music is a huge plus for this young technology. Artists now have a way to push their music without the need for a record label backing them financially. The listening future for the average person will not change immediately but the future looks good for the MP3 format.
