Rules, Grading, etc.

Welcome to a new year at Charlestown High School and to my classroom.  I enforce all rules set forth by the Greater Clark County School Corporation and Charlestown High School.  In addition to those rules, you need to be aware of the following:

1.  Come to class prepared, both materially and mentally.

Bring everyday:     BOOK, PAPER, STUDENT PLANNER, PENCIL, AND INK PEN.

2.  Come to class on time, and be in your seat when the bell rings.  Instruction in this class occurs from bell to bell.  Do not think that it is appropriate to line up at the door.

3.  Do not talk while I am talking.  It is important that all who want to hear me can in fact hear me.  Additionally, I do not tolerate bad language.  This means words in bad taste:  to include swearing and loud language.  Please, raise your hand if you have a question.

4.  Respect yourself and others.  Be responsible for your own activities, materials, and work area.  Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.  Follow directions the first time they are given.

5. When I make an assignment and allow time for some of the work to be done in class that does not mean talk with your friends until the bell rings.  This is an opportunity for you to try the problems while I am available to help.

Classroom disruptions are typically the result of a student feeling frustrated and trying to conceal that frustration by acting out.  It is somehow more appealing to some people to be disruptive than to admit they do not understand what is being taught.  If someone should find themselves in this position, it may be helpful to be aware of the following consequences for classroom misbehavior:

Verbal Warning

Conference After Class

Demerit Issued

If the disruption is blatant (or where there has been an instance where someone was put into danger, etc.), I will impose the more sever punishment immediately.  I realize that people are different;  therefore, I will treat each person differently, but fairly, to get the desired results.  My goal is form any inappropriate behavior to discontinue.

Grading Procedure:

Grading Scale

100 – 94% = A            93-86% = B                 85-72 = C        71 – 65% = D              64 – 0% =F

Your grade will be determined by how you perform on your daily homework and daily quizzes, quizzes and test.

All work must be done in pencil or credit will not be given.

Homework  10%

1.  Homework will be graded, checked for completion, and/or the teacher will grade.

2.  Daily homework quizzes will be given.  These quizzes are not allowed to be retake.

3.  Homework will be accepted late but only 1 class period late.

3.  Homework assignments will include bookwork, worksheets, projects, computer assignments, etc.

Quizzes 30%

1.  Daily quizzes will be given on material from the previous day or material covered earlier in the chapter.

2.  Quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class.

3.  These quizzes will be allowed to be retaken.

Tests 60%

1.  Tests will be given at the end of chapter or unit.

2.  Tests will be a combination of matching, multiple choice, and short answer.

3.  Tests are allowed to be retaken once.

RETAKES

If you choose, you will be allowed to take retakes on tests and quizzes.  The higher of the two grades will count.  For you to retake a test/quiz, you are responsible for doing the following:

1.  Schedule with me to get additional instruction during IRT prior to retaking the test/quiz.

2.  Retake the test/quiz during IRT within 1 week.

Class organization

I will put an outline for the day’s activities, and what assignment is due on the chalkboard in the back of the room.  When class begins, we will review homework.  You will grade your own homework with an ink pen.  If the homework is not graded, you will not receive credit.  After questions and grading is complete, you will have a daily homework quiz.

After this, I will begin a new topic.  I expect students to take notes whenever I am going over new material.  These notes will not be collected, or graded.  It is important that you realize, however, the importance of the notes and their relationship to test, quizzes, etc.  I will usually give some time during class to complete assignments.

Should you miss class/school, you will need to ask about your missed assignments.  Notes may be copied from a friend.  An assignment that was due the day of your absence is due one day after you return.  If you are absent and miss a test, you have one week o make up the test and one day to make up any daily quiz that you miss.
