Post Industrial
Post industrial societies are highly industrialized societies where most of the working population
works in the service sector (tertiary) of the economy. In 1957 the U.S. became the first society
on the planet where over half of the working population worked in the service sector. Today
about 75% of the work force is in the service sector. Education is the largest employer in the
U.S. Health care is second largest employer. Both employ more than the industrial sector.
What is characteristic of these advanced industrial societies is there heavy reliance on information
technologies. In fact, some refer to our society as an information society. Note that the major job
categories are involved in creating, organizing or transferring information.
