Research Interests

My areas of interest include:

My research on the origin of angiosperms took me to a remote region of China, where I searched for new fossils of extinct plants in the order Gigantopteridales.  Previously I  published of an article on these unusual plants, that appeared in the American Journal of Botany.  I am also continuing to collaborate with researchers from the Stanford studying flowering plants and oleanane, a compound present in the Gigantopterid fossils.  Nature magazine featured an article treating our research on the origin of angiosperms.  An important project in progress is the study of water lily fossils from the Lower Cretaceous of Jordan.  These include leaves and stems and present strong evidence that the fossil is related to living members of the water lily family Cabombaceae.
