Many
artists are attracted to working with the figure because
the human image evokes such deeply compelling, even visceral
responses.
Debra's
subjects are usually women, who traditionally have been
depicted as psychologically uninhabited objects, not subjects.
Lesbians in particular have been portrayed for the perusal
and titillation of men. Using traditional oil application
techniques, such as glazing, Debra strives to turn the tables
on this convention.
As
an artist who identifies herself as feminist, liberal, and
lesbian, she has made it her lifes work to restore
those images to our cultural conscience.
