Introduction

    Welcome! Grab your partner and gather round, the Pilgrims and Native Americans from the First Thanksgiving are about to be found!  In this webquest you will explore how the First Thanksgiving came about.  You will know who the Pilgrims and Native Americans were that began our Thanksgiving Celebration.  Are you ready? 

 

Task

   You will complete several tasks to learn more about the First Thanksgiving.

                 Who were the Pilgrims? What did they wear?

           

                 Who were the Native Americans that helped the    Pilgrims?                      What kind of clothes did they wear?

                How did the Pilgrims travel from England?

 

             How did the Pilgrims survive? What celebration did the Pilgrims and the Native Americans have together?

 

                Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?

 

Process

Have your teacher print out a fact sheet before beginning your tasks.  Each team member will fill out a fact sheet.

1.  Explore the following site about the Pilgrims.  Answer the following questions.

    *  How long was their voyage on the Mayflower?

    *  Who lived in the Massachusetts Bay Area that helped the pilgrims to survive?

2.  Follow the Housing link to see the Pilgrim and the Wampanoag homes.  Draw a picture of each on your fact sheet.

3.  The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag dressed very differently.  Follow the links to see their types of dress.

    Press the numbers 1,2,3,4 on Pilgrims and push the sound button on each picture to hear the caption read 

    aloud. Draw a picture of a pilgrim child and a Wampanoag outfit on your fact sheet.

4.  What was the name of the ship the Pilgrims traveled on from England?  Follow the numbers around the ship to explore the parts of the ship.  Write on your fact sheet the name of the ship and draw a picture of what food was stored in (04).

5.  The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag survived by fishing, hunting, and planting crops. On your fact sheet list one food the Pilgrims ate and one food the Wampanoag ate to survive.

6.   View the slideshow to view more about the First Thanksgiving Feast.   On slide number 9 what did the children do between the meals?  Write one thing on your fact sheet.

 

Evaluation

 Students will be given 1 point for each correct attempted answer.

RUBRIC

Excellent

  Students earn 11 points and have a neatly completed fact sheet on the First Thanksgiving.  Students need minimal help managing the webquest.

Making Progress

  Students earn 8-10 points and have a neatly completed fact sheet.  Students need some help managing the webquest.

Needs Help

 Student earns  4-7 points and needs additional help managing the webquest.

No Attempt

 Student scores 3 or below and does not attempt to complete the task.

 

Conclusion

    I hope you and your partner are experts on the First Thanksgiving! You have done an excellent job!  Be sure to turn in your fact sheets to your teacher.

 

Follow-Up Activity:         Why Do We Celebrate Thanksgiving?

 On the construction paper leaf provided by your teacher, write what you are thankful for.  Glue your leaf on a straw provided. Your class will complete a I Am Thankful Bouquet to share with each other.
