Your wedding date is set and you have a vague idea of what you want your wedding to look like. You are ready to go pound the pavement and hit the stroes and catlogues for everything you need. I know this is hard to do, I have been tehre, but DO NOT BUY ANYTHING YET!
It is ok to shop and look for ideas for decorations, cake designs, bouquets, etc, but before you buy anything make a few lists to keep with you when you go to purchase anything.
When shopping remember to ask yourself...
- What components make this item up?
- Is this something I can make myself?
- Do I know someone who could make this for me or something similar?
- Is this an item that is cheaper to make myself or buy premade?
- Can I find it cheaper online?
Many centerpieces, bouquests, decoration kits, etc. can be easily and more economically recreated if you make it your self. This not only saves you money, but allows for more flexibilty in the design. If the cake topper you found only comes with gold embellishments and everything else in your wedding is silver, for instance, you may be able to find the components of the topper and change the colors of the detailed work.
Many prices look great in stores and are advertised as a great deal, but check online first and on ebay. Can you find it cheaper there? DOn't forget to add in the cost difference for paying shipping and handling when buying on line.
Keep a second list handy of people you have talked to ahead of time, (No we don't want to spring tasks on them at the last minute) that are willing to help out with different aspects of the decorations, food, etc. Also note the talents and hobbies these people have.
- Mom-Sewing, crosswork, baking
- Aunt Martha- Flower arrangements (maybe she will do the bouquests)
- Sally- likes scrapbooking (maybe she could put together a unique guest book?)
Just remember to ask people if they are willing to help before you assume you can rely on their talents.
