Teddy Roosevelt is often considered one of our greatest presidents.
He was known for his big stick and bully pulpit politics. The man
that we most often learn about is the brave, fearless president hunting
down big game in Africa, or exploring unknown lands in our American
west. What we don't often learn is the man behind the facade, a
man who survived personal tragedy and public humiliation. The book
The River of Doubt: Roosevelt's Darkest Journey presents us to the human
side of this great American hero. This semester, we will read the
book The River of Doubt and discuss what we have discovered about Teddy
Roosevelt. During our journey down the River of Doubt, we will
learn about Roosevelt, the man, husband, father, politician, along with all of his
strengths and frailties. We will learn
about the people he encountered and the terrain through which he and the
other expedition members had to survive. This book is an exciting
true-life adventure that only Theodore Roosevelt could make possible.

Teddy after a big kill.

The mosquitoes were unbearable. The men had to stay covered with
fly nets and gloves at all times.
